Summer Reading Program
June 14 through August 23, 2019
The Chesterfield Township Library's Summer Reading Program provides a reading challenge for participants of all ages, youth, teens and adults.
This year's summer reading challenge is completely online. Rather than using a paper reading log, patrons are able to click a link from the library's website that opens up the online reading log. There is a feature on the software called "Family Management Portal" that allows parents to access all of their children's reading logs from a single login.
For logging purposes this year we are counting the number of days a participant spends at least some time during their day reading. We are finding this to be a better goal, especially for children. In the past when we used to count either number of books or minutes, one of two things would happen. One group would reach their goal very quickly at the beginning of the summer and say "I'm all done." Others would be intimidated by the goal and not even try.
The read every day goal is great both for stopping the summer slide with young readers and for encouraging a healthy, relaxing habit for teens and adults. For every 10 days of reading completed, the summer reading software will then prompt the participant to visit the library to pick a prize. In addition to the summer reading challenge the library offers many educational programs for a variety of ages and interests. This year's theme is space, so most are on that topic.
